The first day of the 83rd Annual Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens steps off in the Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District.
The Thomas Square Streetcar District is bounded by Anderson Lane on the north, East Broad Street to the east, Victory Drive on the south, and Montgomery Street on the west. ‘Savannah electrified its streetcar in 1888, extending two lines from the Victorian District south along Whitaker Street and creating the Thomas Square streetcar suburb. The streetcar lines were removed in 1920 due to the increased use of the automobile.’ 1 Architectural styles within the district include Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, Italianate, Neoclassical Revival, Colonial Revival, Beaux Arts, Prairie School, and Craftsman.
Designated a National Register Historic District in 1997, the Thomas Square Streetcar Historic District is experiencing a true revival. Alongside long-standing institutions like Elizabeth’s on 37th, new restaurants, shops and galleries open up monthly and careful, considered restoration of the Streetcar District’s wide variety of architectural styles continues apace. The bustling renaissance of the Thomas Square Streetcar District has even caught the attention of the New York Times.
