Meet Us at The Marshall House!
During the week of March 22-25, 2018 the historic Marshall House hotel (123 E. Broughton Street) becomes the home and headquarters of the Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens. All guests of the Tour will arrive to pick up their tickets and information packets at the Marshall House and we thought this would be a perfect time to tell you about your first stop on the 2018 Tour!
With its unmistakable grand iron veranda the Marshall House has been the gracious face of Broughton street since Mrs. Mary Marshall opened its doors in 1851 during Savannah’s railroad boom.
The hotel’s colorful history spans 167 years, and includes roles as a hospital during the Yellow Fever Epidemics of 1854 and 1876, and as a Union hospital during the final months of the Civil War. It was also home to Joel Chandler Harris, author of the famous Uncle Remus Stories during the Reconstruction Period.
In 1999, The Marshall House was extensively restored, and once again became a Savannah fixture. Great efforts were taken to ensure the hallmarks of the historic hotel were preserved or recreated: including the Philadelphia Pressed Brick on the façade and the Savannah Grey Brick throughout, original staircases (some of the spindles and accents have been recreated), original wood floors, fireplaces, brick walls, the doors to each guest room, and several clawfoot tubs dating back to 1880. The veranda and gas lights were reproduced in the likeness of the original features. The Courtyard Atrium was encased with a glass ceiling to give a sense of the area’s previous use as a courtyard. Artifacts found during the restoration were encased in display cabinets on the second and third floor.
Upon re-opening, The Marshall House received numerous preservation awards, including awards from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and the Historic Savannah Foundation. The Marshall House has since been featured on Travel Channel’s Great Hotels, Good Morning America and Fox News. It’s also the recipient of multiple “Best of Savannah” awards, and TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence.
The Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens is looking forward to our temporary residency at the jewel of Broughton Street. There are still rooms available at the Marshall House during the week of the Tour! Call the Marshall House at 1-800-589-6304 and allow them to take care of you. We look forward to meeting you at the Marshall House!
